Internet Evangelism

Telling His Story: Outdoor Industry & Internet Evangelism
Reprinted from Ms. Outdoors, The Windsor Review
Sheila OgleŠ May/June 2007

April 29, 2007, Internet Evangelism Day, came and went with an emphasis on sharing the message of Christ via the information highway. The IE Day website encourages churches to have an internet focus day on or near that date to reach out to their own members as a teaching tool for using the internet and their church website to draw in the unchurched. Participants in that day of email messages and website promotion of Jesus as Lord will continue the work as they did before. One message, one day, one year, how long should we continue to tell the story? Until He returns.

With so many negative web spaces, predator soiled chat rooms and ‘dangerous content’ web sites online, it is good news that so many believers are reaching out with a positive story to tell. It is more than just good news and more than just a story. We are telling the truth about Jesus.

Every few seconds a search engine receives a web address or subject inquiry that opens to a whole new page of opportunity. The hunting industry is no exception. In the outdoor industry, hunting is one of the most popular and fastest growing internet search destinations.

Ten hunting and outdoor web sites that promote the gospel:

1. Christian bowhunters of America

2. ProVision Productions

3. Christian Outdoor Writers

4. God’s Country camo

5. Lighthouse Lure’s

6. Possum’s Trading Post Outfitter

7. Nimrod Pack Systems

8. Mathews Archery

9. BowTech Archery

10. Black Widow Bows

Many people in the hunting industry, who promote the gospel through their products and outdoor outreach, have also been quietly sharing the truth of the gospel through internet orders and contacts for quite a while now. When I say quietly I mean a single scripture printed beneath the BowTech label on their bow boxes that reads, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me- Phillippians 4:13." Quiet moments in scripture compel readers who allow the truth to penetrate their heart and respond to an opportunity for salvation through forgiveness, from a resurrected savior who died on the cross for their sins.

The comedian Christian, with a serious side, Travis Turner, answers technical hunting questions at realtree.com also moonlights as redneck hunter, T-Bone. His testimony in Christ is as strong and serious as the need for his presence in the industry.

Video Workshops are now available through an online Christian web source called ProVision Productions. Heeding the call of the Great Commission, ProVision Productions offer exciting video hunts, featuring youth and adult hunters with moving testimonies in Christ. A spokes person with the Vienna, Illinois outdoor ministry says, "ProVision team presentations can be arranged for anyone interested in this outdoor teaching program."

Ed Possum Anders, owner of Possum's Trading Post Outfitter, tells it like it is and for the record I was impressed with his firm approach to telling the gospel. Ed says. "The internet is a way for me to reach a segment of the population who are not saved. They are hearing the truth in an environment that most guys don't hear it in. We are bold about being Christian and we make no apologies for that. Here at the lodge we have a clean family style environment. We hunt hard and we take very seriously the fact that we represent Him. The great percentage of my guides (men) and cooks (ladies) here at Possum Lodge Outfitters are believers as well. I won't hire anyone who isn't. I don't tolerate those who tell jokes and talk in an unclean way. I welcome believers and non believers alike to hunt and lodge here. There is strictly no smoking and no alcohol allowed here. Last year there were three men who accepted Christ while they were hunting here. None so far this year but we are still looking." Ed does have youth and lady hunters that come out to the lodge to hunt as well. The turkey season in north Missouri has just began to get fired up this week and the hunting is good for the ladies and kids coming out to Possum Lodge for spring turkey hunting this weekend.

Some believers in the outdoor industry are part of the bigger picture when it comes to Internet evangelism. Networking for Christ is much more than a single day spent praying over messages sent across the information highway. It is a recognizable thoroughfare for the message of truth that sets men, women and children free. Emails and web content will always entertain and draw visitors for a moment or two of browsing. Sending a life changing message online that will linger in the heart of even one who needs it makes the internet a valuable evangelism tool day after day after day after . . .
